To date since its inception on the founder’s 24th birthday on April 13, 2016, BooksFromBekkah, Inc. has impacted six extraordinarily phenomenal college-bound, African American seniors during their final spring semester of high school by means of $500.00 individual scholarships to cover college textbook expenses.
Simply from support of the St. Louis community alone, $3,000 has been awarded to minority senior high school students entering college. These awardees are currently enrolled in reknowned colleges and universities throughout the nation! The American University in the District of Columbia, Columbia College, Spelman College, University of Miami in Florida, University of Missouri-Kansas City, and the University of Texas-San Antonio: all house BooksFromBekkah scholars, all starting from mere $2.40 donation requests in honor of the founder’s 24th birthday.
Depending on a student’s major-$300.00 is, more times than not, the cost of just one book. Her honorary $240 goal for her 24th birthday, then, seemed low. However, because it was the founder’s graduation year from pharmacy school the foundation starting year, she figured she’d be able to front the remaining $60 from anticipated graduation gifts to reach the bare minimum of $300. Exceeding the goal and raising $500.00 therefore helped cover a “full years’ worth of textbook costs” per NACS and then some-for an African American student hand-picked by the college advisory staff at a St. Louis public school (Clayton High School, the founder’s alma mater).
The success and promises of The BooksFromBekkah College-Textbook Scholarship Foundation from 2016 awarded the founder a 2017 “30 Under 30” award from DELUX Magazine: a local publication celebrating the affluent lifestyle of professional and influential urban consumers in St. Louis and across the globe. BooksFromBekkah, Inc. has since made appearances on 100.3 The Beat, a local Rap and R&B radio station in St. Louis, Mix 99.5 FM, as well as speaking engagements on college campuses. In 2018 she was recognized as one of St. Louis' most powerful women with a Hot 104.1 and 95.5 FM Phenomenal Woman Award.
The subsequent month following the “30 Under 30” award in 2017, from the First Annual BooksFromBekkah College-Textbook “Scholarship Soiree” alone, $5,000 was raised to directly support the scholarship fund. $2,500 of those proceeds were immediately distributed to five high school seniors to be used upon start of college, with plans of the remaining $2,500 to go toward a $5,000 goal for future recipients in 2018.
